How Much Does an EV Charger Cost to Install in Los Angeles?

Most homeowners in LA pay $800 to $1,800 for a Level 2 EV charger installation. That range is wide because the price depends almost entirely on your home's electrical situation — not the charger itself.
What You're Actually Paying For
The charger hardware (a 240V wall unit from ChargePoint, Tesla, or similar) runs $300 to $700. The rest is labor and electrical work: running a dedicated 50-amp circuit from your panel to the garage, installing a new breaker, and mounting the unit. That's the part that varies.
What Drives the Price Up
- Panel is full — need to add a tandem breaker or upgrade to a larger panel
- Detached garage — running conduit underground costs more than an attached garage
- Long run — the farther the panel is from the charger location, the more wire and labor
- Permit required — LA County requires permits for new circuits; we handle this
- Older wiring — aluminum wiring or undersized service sometimes needs work before we can safely add a 50-amp circuit
What Drives the Price Down
- Panel is close to the garage with open breaker slots
- Attached garage — short run, no trenching
- Modern 200-amp service with capacity to spare
Level 1 vs. Level 2 — Is Level 2 Worth It?
Level 1 is the standard 120V outlet — you plug the car in and it charges at 4 to 5 miles of range per hour. If you drive 30 to 40 miles a day, that's an overnight charge, and plenty of people live with it fine.
Level 2 is a dedicated 240V circuit — 20 to 30 miles of range per hour. A full charge from empty takes 6 to 8 hours instead of 24. If you drive more than 40 miles a day, have a long-range EV, or share the car between two drivers, Level 2 pays for itself in convenience within the first year.
Do I Need a Permit?
Yes, in LA County and most surrounding cities. A new 50-amp circuit is a permitted electrical job. We pull the permit, do the work, and pass inspection. Skipping the permit is common with fly-by-night installers and creates problems when you sell the house.
